UK (cut off from land longest, large farms early, import lot,
concentrated food sector, now retail sector) history to learn..
Repeal of Corn Laws  in mid 1800’s. ‘Chartists’ at that time
were not in favour as it ‘simply meant bosses could pay
workers less’. Enabled 1st industrialisation.
This was the “food policy” then – ‘cheap’ food, and like many
policies was born out of battle between class and land.
Income generated by crops reduced as did the political power
of land ownership that gave rise to ‘mercantilism’.
Put UK farming into 80yr decline with lack of investment and
