 Animal Transport Plan...

Somebody in your food chain must make sure that wherever animals are transported:

  • animals have water, feed and 24 hours rest before starting a journey
  • animals are fit for the journey
  • transport (including trailers) does not cause injury or unnecessary suffering
  • competent and trained people load, unload and transport animals
  • vehicles meet the construction rules and are appropriate for the species and journey
  • carry the correct documents
  • meet the cleansing and disinfection rules.

For more see DEFRA summary of WATO

You should:

Ensure only competent people are involved in the process
Buy only from sources who know how, when and where the animals were reared.
Find animals locally reared.

Possible Policy Statement:
"Where feasible we will only purchase meat from livestock with journey times shorter than 10 hours".
